Description
West Lodge, West Lodge North, and the surrounding walls and gatepiers are a pair of flanking lodges built in the late 18th century. The lodges are constructed from coursed rubble with tooled quoins and dressings, topped with stone slate roofs. The walls and gatepiers are made of tooled-and-margined stone. The square piers feature steep pyramidal caps and attached jambs with moulded tops. The link walls have flat coping and ramp up towards the lodges. Each lodge facing the drive is one storey high with two bays. There is a blocked pointed doorway at the west end of each wall, with a window inserted in the northern wall. The lodges have 12-pane Yorkshire sash windows with intersecting glazing bars under pointed heads, although the eastern window on the south lodge has been altered to include a boarded door. Between the windows, there is a large sunk quatrefoil set with mineral specimens such as purple fluorspar and quartz. All openings have raised stone surrounds, and the gables are coped with moulded kneelers and feature stepped and corniced ridge stacks. One of the lodges was used as a school in the 19th century, while the other served as the schoolmaster's house.
