Description
The Chapel of St. Elizabeth of Hungary is a Roman Catholic chapel built in 1854 by Joseph A. Hansom. It features tooled-and-margined stone with ashlar dressings and has a green slate roof. The building has a rectangular plan with a transeptal south vestry, a tower located at the angle between the vestry and the nave, and a south porch. It is designed in the Free Decorated style.
On the south elevation, there is a chamfered plinth with a string course above and a sill string. The elevation includes stepped buttresses with gabled heads and sunk trefoiled panels. The porch has a moulded arch and an ornate gable cross. To the right of the porch are two 3-light windows and a projecting tower that is octagonal on a square base. The tower features quatrefoil loops for the stairway, an upper stage with openwork quatrefoil lattice, and clock faces on raised panels, topped by an octagonal stone spire with trefoiled lucarnes.
The vestry gable has a string course stepped over a 3-light window, with a quatrefoiled round window above it. There is a 2-light window on the south side of the sanctuary and a 4-light window on the east. The west end has a string course stepped over three trefoil-headed windows and a round window with quatrefoils above. The gables are coped with carved kneelers.
Inside, there is a recessed gallery on the north side featuring an open 8-bay arcade with 2-light openings and foiled circles in the heads. A wooden gallery is located on the west. The sanctuary contains a piscina and sedilia. The ceiling is elaborately coffered and painted, supported by angel corbels and adorned with Emblems of Passion. The chapel also features contemporary stained glass.
