Description
The Post Office and adjacent house, located on the west side of the A68 in Shotley Low Quarter, date from around 1800 and were remodeled in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of rubble with cut quoins, featuring tooled-and-margined detailing on the first floor, and has a slate roof. It stands two storeys high and has six bays.
In the second bay, there is a boarded door with a three-pane overlight, which is flanked by 20-pane fixed shop windows supported by wooden pilasters and a cornice. To the right, there is a renewed door set in a stop-chamfered stone surround with a moulded cornice, accompanied by four-pane sash windows in irregular-block surrounds. The first floor features four-pane sashes in chamfered stone surrounds, except for circular windows in stone surrounds located in bays two and five; the window in bay two is blocked, while the one in bay five has radial glazing. The building has coped gables with moulded kneelers, and there are stepped and corniced stacks at the ends and along the ridge. A single-storey bay to the left also has a coped gable with moulded kneelers.
