Description

Hookmoor Lodges is a pair of lodges with an attached screen wall and central gatepiers, originally serving the now-demolished Parlington Hall. They are believed to date from around 1780 and are attributed to the architect John Carr of York. The lodges are constructed from limestone ashlar, with some remnants of scored stucco, and feature slate roofs.

The gatepiers are quatrefoil in shape, approximately 2 meters high, made up of six courses, two of which form prominent bands. They have a moulded cornice at the flat coping, with the left pier topped by a ball finial. These piers are connected by a short section leading to convex quadrants in the screen walls. The outer ends of the screen walls ramp up to the front inner corners of the lodges, while further short sections of ashlar screen walling ramp down from the outer corners of the lodges, with the north end forming another convex quadrant.

Each lodge is two low storeys high, facing the road with gables. The gables are pedimented and feature modillions, containing a lunette, and beneath the pediment is a full-height recessed arch with a prominent Gibbs surround, which holds a 12-pane sashed window. The rear gables are similar but include chimney stacks, and the arches on the rear are blind. The facades facing the drive each have an arched doorway with a similar Gibbs surround, and there is one 4-pane sash window on each floor behind the door. The north lodge has a parallel two-storey addition of rubble on its north side.
