Description
This is a milepost, likely dating from the early to mid 19th century, located on the west side of Micklefield Roman Road. It is made of stone and features cast-iron plates. The stone post has a triangular section with a flat semicircular head. Cast-iron plates with raised lettering are bolted onto the head and each of the two outer faces. The head is inscribed with "BARNSDALE & LEEDS ROAD HOOK MOOR BRANCH" around the circumference and "MICKLEFIELD" below. The side plates display the distances to various locations: Borobridge 21 miles, Doncaster 23 miles, Wetherby 8 3/4 miles, Pontefract 8 3/4 miles, Aberford 1 1/2 miles, and Castleford 5 1/2 miles.
