Description

Whitehill Villa is a 2-storey, symmetrical, 3-bay castellated Gothic house built in 1851, with later additions and alterations. The building features droved grey ashlar sandstone with polished and droved dressings on the south (principal) and east elevations, while the north and west elevations are made of stugged cream ashlar sandstone. It has a base course, cornices above the ground floor canted windows, an eaves string course, and a castellated parapet with blind pointed-arch panels at the terminal dies. The windows have chamfered reveals.

On the south (entrance) elevation, there is an advanced doorpiece with a hoodmoulded, 4-centred arched doorway, a timber panelled door, and a 4-light fanlight above. A single window is located on the first floor, with a date panel set above it. The outer left and right bays contain 3-light canted windows, and there are single windows above on the first floor. To the right, there is a harled screen wall with ashlar coping, which is set back and has a later lean-to conservatory.

The north elevation is irregular with a 4-bay configuration, featuring a single-storey, 4-bay lean-to addition that is slightly set back and projects to the east. There is a stair window with a small opening at ground level in the inner right bay, and a small (possibly later) window on each floor of the inner left bay. Each outer bay has a window on both floors. The inner bays of the addition have boarded doors flanked by windows, and there is a partly-glazed boarded door on the outer right.

The east elevation has a swept gable with a coped wallhead stack at the centre, and blinded windows at the first floor on the extreme left and right. A lean-to addition projects to the east from the centre.

The villa features 6-pane timber sash and case windows, as well as lying-pane timber sash and case windows on the north elevation of the addition. The roof is piended slate, with slate on the addition and ashlar coped wallhead stacks on the side elevations, along with ridged ashlar coped skews.

The boundary wall is made of sandstone rubble with rounded ashlar coping, and the gatepiers are chamfered square plan, constructed from grey ashlar sandstone with pyramidal copes. The original wrought-iron gates have been replaced.
