Description

Bonnyrigg Parish Church dates from 1845, with a later addition to the rear. It is a rectangular hall church with flanking triple gable aisles and a three-stage octagonal tower. The church is built of stugged and snecked sandstone with droved ashlar dressings. Lancet windows are a prominent feature, with string courses between the tower stages, a base course, and long and short quoins.

The east elevation, which is the principal facade, has three bays. The central bay is gabled, with the aisle wall set back to the north and the tower advanced to the south. A hood-moulded, chamfered, pointed-arch doorway is centrally positioned, with a replacement timber door and pointed-arch fanlight above. Single windows flank the doorway, and there is a single window to the left. The tower has a square base to the right, with a single window high in the first stage, blank oculi to every other side of the second stage, louvered, pointed-arch openings on each side at the third stage, and ashlar dressed clock faces above. Blind arcaded parapets are present, topped by an octagonal copper spire with a cast-iron weather vane.

The south elevation features five bays, including the tower to the left, a triple gabled block to the centre, and a modern, slightly recessed gabled addition to the right. A tall window is centrally positioned. A circular window is set high, with a non-aligned window at ground level in the bay to the left of centre. The tower has a window at the first stage, an oculus at the second stage, a louvered niche, and a clock face above. A tall window is located to the right of centre, with two windows at ground and first floor levels in the bay to the far right.

The interior includes a rectangular entrance vestibule, featuring a timber panelled roof with iron shafts marking the aisles and supporting pointed-arch beams. There is a timber panelled gallery along the east wall, accessed via a stairwell in the northeast tower. The gallery’s stair has decorative cast-iron balusters and a timber handrail. A boarded dado is also present. An integral pulpit and organ are incorporated; the organ pipes are located on the west wall behind the altar, and the carved pulpit is positioned between the organ pipes and the altar, with steps on each side. A portable font and pine pews are also present.

Point-arched leaded clear glass windows have stained glass margins, while the addition has modern windows. The roof is covered with grey slate, with a copper-covered spire, ashlar coped skews, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
