Description
This building is a late 19th-century former infant school located on Polton Street in Bonnyrigg, featuring later alterations and additions. It is a single-storey structure designed in the Queen Anne style, characterized by its symmetrical 13-bay layout and advanced gabled ends. At the center, there is an octagonal, domed bellcote topped with a weather vane. The exterior is constructed of red brick, with yellow brick at the rear, and is adorned with polished ashlar sandstone dressings. Notable architectural details include a base course, cill course, a band course above the windows, and quoins.
On the northwest (principal) elevation, the 13-bay façade is arranged in a 3-7-3 grouping. The central bay features a doorway with a stop-moulded architrave and a carved inscription reading 'INFANT SCHOOL', topped by a deeply carved swan neck pediment and a two-leaf timber panelled door. Each of the three flanking bays contains a window, while the advanced gabled bays at the outer left and right have Venetian windows that are arched and blocked. Tall brick stacks are positioned at the re-entrant angles.
The southeast (rear) elevation is a symmetrical 11-bay design, also grouped in a 3-5-3 arrangement. The centre has a slightly advanced, flat-roofed 5-bay group featuring a tripartite window. Each flanking bay has a small window set wide apart, and there are boarded doors in the extreme flanking bays. The outer left and right gabled bays contain three lights, and there is a full-height brick stack on the outer right.
The building features various types of timber sash and case windows, including 2-, 12-, 15-, and 24-pane designs, as well as a small-pane, fixed tripartite window at the rear. Additionally, there are eight later large bulbous skylights evenly distributed on each side of the roof. The roof itself is covered with grey slate and includes decorative fishscale banding. The octagonal wooden bellcote has a cornice, dome, and weather vane, while the front features red brick, coped stacks, and yellow brick coped stacks at the rear. The building is also equipped with ashlar coped skews and cast-iron rainwater goods.
