Description
4 Harlaw Road in Edinburgh is an early 20th century, two-storey, three-bay Old English house with an asymmetrical gabled design. The building is constructed of red brick, featuring terracotta dressings and details, concrete raised cills, and a base course. It has timber-framed gables, decorative bargeboards, and segmental-headed openings on the ground floor, with timber mullions.
The northeast (main) elevation consists of three bays. The outer right bay is advanced and features a bipartite segmental-headed window. There is a roll-moulded string course above this bay and a tripartite window on the first floor. To the left of this bay, there is a four-panelled door with a four-light segmental-headed design, leading to an inner half-glazed door. The door has a swept roof and slightly projecting eaves. The narrow gabled bay to the left has a window on the ground floor and a tripartite window that breaks the eaves on the first floor.
The ground floor windows are six-pane over plate glass sash and case, while the first floor windows are four-pane over plate glass sash and case. The roof is covered in grey slate, with lead flashings and coped brick ridge stacks, along with plain timber bargeboards.
The boundary wall and gatepiers consist of a brick wall with concrete coping that runs along Harlaw Road to the northeast, stepping toward the northwest end. Square brick piers with brick coping are located at intervals along the wall.
