54 Clay Loan, Kirkwall

54 Clay Loan in Kirkwall is an early 19th-century, two-storey, three-bay house that forms part of a symmetrical end-of-terrace arrangement. The building is situated on rising ground to the west and is adjacent to another two-storey house. The exterior is harled.

The principal elevation features a timber panelled door with a two-pane letterbox fanlight located in the central bay at ground level, with a window above it on the first floor. Each bay has a window on both floors flanking the central entrance.

The east side elevation is blank, with a raised flue positioned in the centre. The house has four-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is traditionally covered with graded Caithness stone tiles and includes a stone ridge, stone skews, and harled, corniced stacks on both the east and west sides. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.

The interior was not seen during the inspection in 1998.

The boundary walls consist of low squared and coursed rubble with a ridged concrete coping. The property is enclosed by fleur-de-lys-headed railings and features a similar gate at the centre.
