Description

6 Dundas Crescent in Kirkwall is a late 19th-century building consisting of a pair of two-storey, six-bay mirrored houses, each featuring three bays. The outer bays are gabled and corbelled, and both houses have porches with gabled entrances supported by consoles. The gables are adorned with spike finials and bargeboards. The structure is made of stugged sandstone ashlar with polished ashlar dressings, and there is a base course. The windows have chamfered reveals, and exposed rafters are visible under the eaves.

On the principal elevation, the bays are arranged in groups of three. The left group, which is Number 6, has a boarded door set within a shouldered roll-moulded doorpiece at the centre of the ground floor. Above the door is a letterbox fanlight and a blank shield motif on the gable. There is a single window on the first floor, a three-light canted window at the ground level to the left, and a single window in the canted, corbelled gable above. To the right of centre, there is a corniced tripartite bay at the ground level and a single gabletted window that breaks the eaves above. The right group, Number 8, mirrors this arrangement.

The windows are 4-pane timber sash and case, with small rooflights on the west pitch of Number 8. The roof is covered with purple slate and features a stone ridge, corniced dressed ashlar gablehead and ridge stacks, and a full set of polygonal cans, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.

The boundary walls, gatepiers, and railings consist of low coped walls with fleur-de-lys-headed railings. The gatepiers are square-plan, made of squared rubble, and topped with shallow pyramidal caps.
