Description
The Irvine Burns Club, located at 28 Eglinton Street in Irvine, is a late 19th-century, two-storey, three-bay office building featuring Jacobean architectural details. It is constructed from red bull-faced sandstone, which includes a base course, a dividing string course, and an eaves cornice. The openings are framed with roll-moulded surrounds and stone mullions. The central door is set in a round-arched, voussoired opening, adorned with a bead and hollow surround and a keystone that extends up to the frieze above the cornice, which is decorated with strapwork carving. The entrance features panelled two-leaf doors topped by a round-arched, astragalled fanlight. Above this, there is a window on the first floor.
To the right, the outer bay has paired windows at the ground level, separated by a shaft that supports a bowed ashlar oriel on the first floor, which has a stone, half-conical roof that breaks the eaves into a gablehead featuring a shield panel. The right corner of the building is rounded and corbelled to a square before the eaves. The outer bay to the left also has paired windows at the ground level and a bipartite window on the first floor, situated under a gablehead with a heraldic panel.
The building features timber plate glass sash and case windows, grey slate roofing, and decorative gutter heads. The gables are crowstepped with beak skewputts, and there are coped gablehead stacks with red terracotta cans and ridge tiles. A wall with a side entrance is located to the outer right, which is crenellated at the wallhead.
To the left, there is a blank gabled return. A lower two-storey service block and rear entrance project to the right at the back, with a chimney gablehead bay that breaks the eaves to the left of centre. There is also a single-storey, half-piended laundry and coal house extending from the service block, which features a coped ridge stack.
The interior was not seen in 1996.
