Description

Granton Customs House is a later 19th century, two-storey, seven-bay office building with an L-shaped plan. The main block is connected to a short wing by a bowed bay at an acute angle to the southeast. The building features classical detailing, including pilastered and corniced door surrounds. It is constructed from coursed stugged sandstone with droved ashlar dressings and polished ashlar door surrounds. The design includes a droved base course, band course, and moulded cornice, as well as architraved windows and bull-faced angle quoins, notably on the bowed bay.

On the northeast elevation, there is a stone step leading to a central entrance flanked by Doric pilasters and topped with a cornice. The entrance features a two-leaf panelled timber door. To the left of the doorway, there are bipartite windows on each floor, as well as a window in the outer right bay and in the curved bay; the remaining bays have single windows.

The east elevation has three regularly spaced bays with a pilastered and corniced entrance on the left side. The south elevation has a wing that advances to the outer right, with a small projecting section at the re-entrant angle and a short wing to the left. This elevation is mostly blank, except for small windows in the projecting sections and a single first-floor window in the main block.

The west elevation of the main block is blank. The building primarily features eight-pane timber sash and case windows. The roofs are covered with grey slate and have a piended design, except for the wing on the south side, which has a coped gabled roof. There are three ridge stacks with moulded cornices on the main block and a corniced wallhead stack on the south gable end.

The interior was not inspected in 1997.
