Description
159 Lower Granton Road is a public house built around 1840, with a mid-20th century addition to the west and a late 20th century pub front. It is a two-storey, L-shaped building designed in a classical style, featuring a moulded pediment on the main elevation. The exterior is constructed of coursed, tooled sandstone, which is less finely coursed at the rear, and has ashlar dressings.
The north entrance elevation has seven bays arranged in a 3-2-1-1 grouping. The timber pub front includes a dentilled cornice on the ground floor between the third and fifth bays, with an entrance flanked by windows. Above the entrance is a single window, and there are three windows to the left and one to the right on each floor, with an additional single window above. To the right, there is a slightly projecting bay with a moulded pediment and V-jointed quoins. The central entrance features long and short surrounds, with an architraved window above. The mid-20th century addition on the far right has an ashlar cornice and a central entrance with a window above.
The south elevation has a rear wing that projects to the far left, while the main block is slightly wider at the re-entrant angle. A steel fire escape is located on the far right bay.
The west elevation adjoins a mid-20th century rendered extension of the former Granton Hotel. The building features 12- and 2-pane timber sash and case windows, with grey slate roofs that are piended on the main block. There is an ashlar ridge stack with a moulded cornice to the west of the main block and a similar wallhead stack at the eastern end, along with a single round chimney.
Inside, the pub has been modernised and is now open-plan.
Additionally, there is a small section of coursed sandstone boundary wall with ashlar coping that adjoins a moulded ashlar gatepier at the entrance to the former stables at 157 Lower Granton Road.
