Description

This building is a shop and post office, originally part of a bakery, dating to around 1840. It forms part of a two-story and attic, eight-bay classical terrace of tenements and shops, with a rear wing and industrial outbuildings. The north elevation is faced with stugged sandstone ashlar, while the side and rear elevations are brick. Dressed, droved ashlar highlights the north elevation, along with coped gables and a cornice. The building has long and short quoins on the north side, segmental-headed windows with stone sills elsewhere, architraved windows and doorways, a parapet, and piended dormers.

The north (entrance) elevation is divided into two symmetrical sections. The left section has three bays, with a painted shop front on the ground floor, a central doorway with a two-leaf storm door and fanlight, and a single window above. Flanking the shop front are three-light canted windows, with single windows above each. The right section has a three-bay ground floor and a five-bay first floor, with paired doorways in the center and panelled, part-glazed doors to the right. Above the central doorways is a single window, and three-light canted windows are located in the outer left and right bays, with two single windows above each canted window. Piended dormers are located over the central window and between each outer pair of windows.

A three-bay wing projects from the south (rear) elevation, with slightly irregular window placement, including a stair window in the center, behind the shop. On the east elevation, there is an architraved entrance with a replacement panelled door and a small inserted window above. The west elevation features a single window to the right of each floor, and a segmental-arched entrance to the rear wing.

Most windows are timber sash and case with 12 panes. The canted ground floor windows have 6 and 3-pane timber frames, with some top-hung casements. The roofs are covered in grey slate, with a piended roof on the rear wing. Gable stacks are located on the east and west sides, with a mutual ridge stack. Rainwater goods are largely cast iron.

A group of rear outbuildings are situated around a stone sett yard, to the south of the terrace. These buildings are constructed of brick with stone dressings, and have slate and corrugated asbestos roofs. They feature mainly segmental-arched windows with stone sills. A single-story structure with an attic, under a piended roof, adjoins the main terrace, with a slated piended dormer entrance to the east, accessed by timber steps above a lean-to. A slightly tapered, quadrangular brick industrial chimney rises from the west pitch of the roof. An adjoining L-plan structure (single story with attic) runs parallel to the shorter wing, with a shorter, later chimney on the coped north gable. A lean-to is present at the front. The main wing to the east has a coped gable on the right of the north elevation, a blocked attic window in the gable, and a large inserted doorway below. A 20th-century boarded timber and glazed structure occupies the re-entrant angle.

A pair of ashlar gatepiers, with droved arrises and corniced pyramidal caps, are located to the west of the terrace. The interiors of the building were not inspected in 1997.
