Description

1 and 3 Montrose Terrace is a public house built around 1880, incorporating earlier structures at the rear. It features a two-storey design (three storeys at the rear) with a triangular plan and nine bays, situated on sloping ground. The building showcases Scots Baronial detailing, highlighted by a circular tower at the south corner, topped with finials and covered in fish-scale slates. The southeast elevation is constructed of random rubble, which is rendered and painted.

The principal elevation has ground floor bays separated by pilasters that support a frieze and cornice. The ground floor has irregular window placements, featuring a two-leaf timber panelled door and a single timber panelled door. Decorative dormers that break the eaves are present, with the right dormer inspired by one at Maybole Castle in Ayrshire. The central dormer head displays a decorative device featuring roses and a stag's head from Holyrood. To the outer left, there is a crowstepped gable adjoining the tower, which includes a corbelled crenellated feature with a gun loop.

The tower, which is corbelled out from the first floor, has three windows and a cill course. Above the eaves, there is a panelled band adorned with rosettes and ball mouldings. The west elevation consists of three storeys and primarily features older fabric with irregular fenestration and three dormers that break the eaves. The northeast elevation has a crowstepped M-gable and also displays irregular fenestration.

The roof is covered with graded grey slate, featuring a chamfered corniced stack to the south and a plain wall-head stack to the north. The ground floor includes some small-pane glazing, while a mix of non-traditional and timber sash and case windows can be found elsewhere.

The property is complemented by retaining walls, steps, railings, and a gate. There is a flight of seven stone steps leading to a random rubble boundary wall and a gate pier topped with a ball and finial cast-iron gate to the northeast. Additionally, there are two flights of stone steps to the south, along with random rubble retaining walls that have shaped skews topped with ball and finial railings.
