4 Granton Square, Granton, Edinburgh

The Harbourmaster's House and Office, located at 1 Granton Square in Granton, Edinburgh, was designed by John Henderson around 1838. This three-storey building with a basement is part of a terrace of four tenements and features a classical symmetrical design with eleven bays arranged in a 3-5-3 pattern. It is constructed from coursed tooled sandstone with ashlar dressings, showcasing band courses beneath the ground and first floors, V-jointed angle quoins, and an eaves cornice. The windows are architraved.

On the entrance elevation, the central five bays are recessed, with architraved entrances located at the 3rd, 4th, 7th, and 9th bays. Each entrance has a panelled timber door with a rectangular border-glazed fanlight, although the doors have been modified to single leaf except for the two-leaf door at No. 2. Stone steps lead up to each entrance, featuring replacement cast iron railings that curve to follow the pavement. The steps to Nos 3 and 4 are shared, and there are curved stone steps leading to the basements, which are more broadly sweeping for the outer tenements (Nos 1 and 4). The first-floor windows have cornices and aprons, and the fenestration is regular.

The rear elevation includes an early 20th-century single-storey red brick extension to the right. The north elevation has four regularly-fenestrated bays, with steps leading up to a shallow ashlar porch featuring a cornice at the 3rd bay. This elevation also has an architraved entrance with a two-leaf panelled timber door and a rectangular border-glazed fanlight. The west side of this elevation abuts a warehouse at 1 West Harbour Road. The south elevation consists of three regularly-fenestrated bays.

The building primarily features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate hipped roof, and three ashlar ridge stacks with moulded cornices. There are identical wallhead stacks on the north and south elevations, with round cans.

The interiors have not been inspected since 1997. The property is enhanced by low curved stone walls with ashlar coping and cast iron railings on the side elevation of No. 1, which have crocketed finials (some missing) and pine cone finials on the gateposts. There are steps leading up to a flagged pathway with replacement railings, and cast-iron shoescrapers with anthemion supports are positioned on either side of the steps to the entrance, although only the one on the west side remains intact.
