Description

This is a three-storey and attic office block built in 1873 on a corner site in Edinburgh. It is constructed of cream sandstone, with polished ashlar to the ground floor of the front elevation, squared and snecked stugged rubble above, and polished dressings. The rear elevation uses stugged dressings. The building features a base course and a moulded string course above the tall ground floor openings. An impost course is moulded and rises to hoodmoulds over the windows.

The northeast elevation, fronting Bernard Street, is five bays wide, including a curved corner bay to the right. A central bay is blank and features a wallhead stack linked to a rendered roof and corbelled above the first floor, incorporating machicolations and a blank panel with a stepping hoodmould at the second floor. Bays to the left and right of the centre have bipartite windows at ground and first floor levels. The second-floor windows project above the eaves with finialled gableheads and kneelers, featuring ashlar mullions.

The entrance doorway is located to the outer left and has a stepping hoodmould with label stops carved as masks of Bacchus and Neptune. A bipartite window sits above, with a string course stepping over a blank panel. The curved corner bay on the right has a slightly recessed ground floor, with bipartite windows at ground and first floors. The second floor is corbelled to form a square, with a bipartite window, a blank panel, a stepping hoodmould, and a small arched window in the gablehead.

The northwest elevation, facing Carpet Lane, is four bays wide, excluding the curved corner bay. A bay to the right of the centre has bipartite windows on the ground and first floors and a single window on the second floor. The bay to the outer right features single windows, including a small bipartite window on an intermediary floor above the first floor. A blank bay to the left of the centre contains a tall, broad, shouldered wallhead stack linked to a rendered roof and corbelled above the first floor, with small windows in the gablehead.

The windows are timber sash and case, with mostly plate glass glazing. Some rear windows have 4- and 9-pane glazing, and the lower sashes of ground floor windows incorporate etched glass. The slate roof has metal flashings, and there are two wallhead stacks. A moulded eaves gutter is present.

The interior features offices on the ground floor with heavily dentilled cornices, although the vestibule and stairway have been altered.
