Description

39, 41, 43, 45, 47, 49, 51 Bernard Street is a mid 19th century, four-storey, four-bay tenement building that includes shops on the ground floor. There is also a single-storey shop addition to the southeast, which was added before 1876. The building is constructed of cream sandstone, featuring a polished ashlar ground floor, stugged ashlar with polished dressings above, coursed and squared rubble at the rear, and coursed rubble on the side. It has a base course, shallow pilasters that divide the bays at the ground floor, and a frieze and cornice above. There is a cill band course on the first and second floors, and an eaves cornice with a blocking course. The first-floor windows are architraved and corniced, with ashlar mullions.

On the northeast (front) elevation, there is a common stair doorway on the outer left with a panelled door and a rectangular plate glass fanlight, along with a narrow window beside it. To the left of the centre is a shop doorway detailed similarly, with three windows to the right. The outer left bay features bipartite windows, while the remaining bays have single windows. There is a rectangular bipartite dormer on the left. The single-storey flat-roofed shop extension in the re-entrant angle to the southeast forms a corner with Carpet Lane and has rectangular openings with stop-chamfered moulded reveals and a dentilled eaves cornice.

The southwest (rear) elevation has single windows and two rectangular bipartite dormers. The building features four-pane timber sash and case windows, with replacement shop windows at the ground floor. The roof is slate, with a broad apex stack on the northwest. Inside, the shops have suspended ceilings throughout.
