Description

42 Bernard Street is an early 19th-century, four-storey tenement with an attic, featuring six bays. The building is constructed of cream sandstone, with polished ashlar on the ground floor and dressed ashlar with polished dressings above, while the rear is made of coursed and squared rubble. It has a base course, raised quoins, an impost band course at the ground floor, a band course above the ground floor, an eaves cornice, and round-arched openings at the ground floor, except for two later rectangular windows flanking the doorway to No 38.

On the south (front) elevation, the doorway is located to the outer right and is flanked by rectangular shop windows with chamfered reveals. It features a two-leaf panelled door with round-arched radial astragals. There is an off-centre doorway to the right with a panelled door and a semi-circular fanlight with radial astragals. To the left, there are three windows and another doorway with round-arched fanlight heads, also with modern radial astragals and a panelled door. Above, there are single windows on the first, second, and third floors. The nepus gable at the center has two windows, with two single dormers featuring piended roofs on either side.

The north (rear) elevation has single windows and a lower two-storey extension with a piended roof. The extension is built of squared and snecked rubble at the ground floor and has a segmental-arched opening that is now blocked.

The building features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, round-arched modern shop windows, and small-pane fixed windows with semi-circular hopper heads and radial astragals. The slate roof has a metal ridge, an apex stack to the nepus gable (which has been rebuilt), and two broad apex stacks.

The interior was not seen in 1993.
