Description
This building, located at 71-77 High Street in Montrose, dates back to 1885 and is a three-storey and attic, five-bay classical tenement. The ground floor features a modern shopfront, while the upper levels are constructed from sandstone ashlar. Notable architectural details include a cornice below the first floor, a cill at the second floor, and a consoled eaves with a parapet above. The central feature is a curvilinear nepus gable.
On the west elevation, the ground floor has been completely modernised. The first floor has architraved, corniced windows, with the central window featuring a consoled pediment. The second floor has an architraved window, and the centre of the nepus gable displays a round-arched, pilastered window. Below the cill of this window is a panel dated 1885, with a pediment above and a panelled stack. Flanking this are canted, piended dormers.
The north elevation adjoins 63/65 High Street, where the ground floor shopfront continues into that building, revealing an exposed rubble stone gablehead. The south elevation adjoins 79 High Street.
The east elevation has extensive modern additions that extend eastward, obscuring the original elevation. There is a projecting piended bay offset to the left, with dormers on both the left and right sides.
The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass glazing. The roof is a jerkin-head style covered in grey slate, featuring a sandstone stack on the north side and a panelled ashlar stack on the nepus gable.
The interior of the upper floors was not seen in 1997.
