Description

This building, located at 8-16 Broomknoll Street in Airdrie, dates from around 1860 and is a two-storey, six-bay, rectangular-plan, symmetrical, gabled, classical tenement with shops on the ground floor. The facade is made of yellow ashlar sandstone, while the sides and rear are constructed from squared and snecked rubble. There is a dividing band between the first and second storeys, an eaves course, and profiled guttering. The windows have plain margins and projecting lintels on the second storey.

On the principal elevation (east), there are four modern plate glass shop fronts at ground level, with an entrance to the stairwell in the center. The upper storey features regular fenestration, with tripartite windows that have pilaster mullions in the outer bays and paterae in the frieze above. The wallhead stacks are symmetrical and located in the penultimate outer bays.

The rear elevation (west) has irregular fenestration. The north side elevation is obscured by an adjoining building, while the south side elevation features a blind gable end that is also obscured at ground level by another abutting building.

The building has tilt-and-turn plate glass windows, grey slate roofing with lead flashing, cast-iron rainwater goods, and coped gable stacks. Inside, the ground floor has modern shop fittings, and the tenements have been converted into a dentist's practice on the first floor.
