Description

61 Bernard Street is an early 18th century gabled corner tenement in Leith, Edinburgh, which may incorporate earlier remains. It was restored by Robert Hurd & Partners between 1972 and 1978. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a public house on the ground floor and a lower four-bay tenement that features a central pend leading to Bernard Street. The exterior is harled with sandstone margins, and the window dressings are painted. It has ashlar strip quoins and the pub front is characterized by regular rectangular openings divided by shallow pilasters, a dentilled cornice, and a chamfered and corbelled northern corner.

On the northwest elevation, which faces the shore, there are six bays with the public house on the ground floor. The two central bays are raised in a nepus gable, with windows flanking the flue line, and single windows in the remaining bays. There are two single catslide dormers on either side of the gable. To the outer right, there is earlier fabric from a doorpiece (No. 37 Shore) that has been incorporated into Waterview House, built around 2004. This doorpiece features a lugged roll-moulded architrave and a broken scrolled swan neck pediment enclosing a carved cartouche dated 1711, which displays an entwined monogram.

The northeast elevation, which faces Bernard Street, shows a broad gabled elevation of the Shore building on the right, with a raised wallhead and a broad apex stack. It has single windows on the first and second floors, and two small windows on the third floor. The four-bay tenement to the left has a round-arched roll-moulded pend at the center, with two windows flanking to the right, and a small shop window with a very low corniced doorway to the left. There are remains of a forestair to the outer left, and single windows on the first and second floors, which are placed irregularly. There are also two paired catslide dormers.

The southwest elevation is gabled with an irregularly raised wallhead and a broad apex stack, featuring remains of openings and fireplaces, with bolection moulding at the third floor level. The south (rear) elevation has single windows and paired and single catslide dormers. The building has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a dark slate roof with a metal ridge, and a steeply pitched roof extending to Nos 59-65 Bernard Street, with three apex stacks. The ashlar skews and scrolled skewputts add to the architectural detail. The interior was not seen in 1993.
