Description

Castle Grange, located at 26 Castle Street in Irvine, is an earlier 19th-century, two-storey classical house with a basement and a three-bay rectangular plan, featuring a stair tower at the rear. The exterior is constructed of rubble stone, rendered at the front and painted on all sides, with the basement showcasing channelled rustication, a painted eaves band, and quoins.

The north (principal) elevation is symmetrical, featuring a central masonry staircase with square piers at the base that leads to a pilastered and corniced doorpiece. This doorpiece includes a 12-pane rectangular fanlight and a door with a glazed upper panel. The basement windows are present, with architraved windows on the first floor and plain margins and lintels at the eaves on the second floor. A stone eaves cornice and a lead-covered parapet complete this elevation.

The east elevation has one window on the second floor to the right, while the west elevation mirrors this. The south elevation is asymmetrical, featuring a piended projection offset to the left, which includes a second-storey window on the west face and a timber oriel on the east. To the right, there is a single bay with a window on each floor.

All elevations are adorned with 12-pane sash windows. The roof is piended and covered in grey slate, with chimney stacks centrally placed to the east and west above the eaves, along with a small stack on the rear projection.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1996. The property is surrounded by rubble stone boundary walls with coping on the north, south, east, and west sides, reduced to a low section for entrances on the north. There is an outbuilding to the southeast, and a conservatory addition to the west is not included in the listing.
