Description

Springfield, located on Crookston Road in Brechin, is a classical house built around 1790, with various later alterations and additions. This two-storey and basement structure features three symmetrical bays. The front (south elevation) is rendered and includes ashlar dressings, such as a string course between the basement and ground floor, a moulded cill course at the first floor, and a deep cornice with a blocking course above, flanked by pilastered ends. The centre bay is slightly advanced. The entrance door has a segmental arched fanlight and flanking sidelights, all under a porch supported by Ionic columns and corresponding Ionic pilasters, which hold up an entablature decorated with a rosette motif. Access to the entrance is via steps that oversail the basement and are adorned with a decorative cast iron balustrade. The ground floor windows and the central window at the first floor feature moulded architraves. The side and rear elevations are constructed of rubble with ashlar margins and lined out render on the later additions. A semicircular stair tower is located at the centre of the rear (north) elevation, boasting a very tall window. Mid to late 20th century additions flank the stair tower, and in 2001, a single storey and basement addition with a piended roof was added to the west elevation.

The windows are predominantly timber sash and case with 12-pane glazing. The roof is piended and slated, with a rendered and coped stack on the east elevation featuring cans.

The interior, which was viewed in 2014, showcases a decorative classical scheme in a 19th century period style. The arrangement of rooms and openings, especially on the ground floor and basement, mainly dates from the late 20th century and around 2011. Some 19th century details remain, including cornicing in a first-floor room and window shutters. The stone stair features a cast iron decorative balustrade, which was repaired in 2011.
