Description
The Mary Acre is a two-storey detached house located at 11 Argyll Street in Brechin, built between 1901 and 1902 by the architectural firm Honeyman, Keppie and Mackintosh. The exterior features stugged snecked rubble with polished dressings.
The east elevation showcases a large porch with an architraved door and a cornice, situated in the re-entrant angle of the left-hand advanced gable. This side also includes a four-light canted bay with a single-light window above and vertical timber boarding at the apex of the gable. Both the porch and bay have flat roofs enclosed by high plain parapets.
On the south elevation, there is a door and a series of windows on the ground and first floors within the advanced left-hand gable, which has a half-timbered apex. There is also a single-storey and attic wing that extends at right angles, featuring a piended roof, three windows, and a two-light dormer below the eaves to the south, as well as two doors and three small windows to the north.
The north elevation is marked by a two-storey semicircular stair turret that has three first-floor windows at the left-hand gable, along with two ground and first-floor windows. The roof overhangs with slated covering and bracketed eaves, complemented by decorative barge boards.
Inside, the house features a Minister 'Gothic' fireplace in the former library, along with various tiled fireplaces that exhibit Art Nouveau characteristics, particularly those found in the bedrooms. The ceilings and timberwork in the attic are also noted for their quality. Additionally, there is a sundial located in the garden.
