Description
Annfield is an L-plan classical house dating from 1850. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar, with channelled masonry to the ground floor, a prominent band course above, eaves band, cornice, and blocking course. The first-floor windows feature long and short margins, and there are rusticated quoins at the first floor level. The group value context of this building is that it represents a significant example of 19th-century domestic architecture.
The east (entrance) front is distinguished by a columned portico, set obliquely within the re-entrant angle of the wings. The portico has a mutule cornice, balustrade, and a glazed light to the ridge side. To the left of the portico is a two-bay wing, with a window in the outer bay now converted into a door. The original windows on the ground floor are plain, and the first-floor bays are symmetrical, with a piended dormer set off to the left. A one-bay wing extends to the right, with a blind feature on the ground floor and a single-story extension to the right, finished with matching channelled masonry. The gable end of the main block is made of squared and snecked sandstone. The south-facing gable of the left wing has two bays with blinded windows.
The west (garden) front of the house has three bays. A doorway is centrally placed, with a window above it serving to light the staircase. A full-height canted window is positioned to the left, featuring four lights on both the ground and first floors, a cornice between floors, and a piended dormer above. Tripartite windows are located in the right bay, with plain margins and a cornice between floors, as well as a piended dormer.
The north front displays a two-bay gable end to the right, with blinded windows in the outer bay. A two-bay wing is situated to the left, constructed using squared and snecked sandstone. This wing features narrow windows in the inner bay, and a single-story extension with a doorway.
The windows are predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows on the entrance front, though later plate glass windows are present on the garden front, with variations on the north front. The roof is covered in grey slate with coped skews, and includes ashlar gablehead stacks and one at the ridge of the lesser wing.
The interior features a cornice in the portico and a rich modillion cornice in the entrance hall, with cornices continuing throughout the building. A room on the upper floor, overlooking the garden, has a high dado rail with cross strap and patera decoration, an egg and dart cornice, and deep relief plasterwork to the ceiling featuring a geometric lozenge, circular, and angular pattern, all edged with decorative mouldings. It contains a buff-coloured marble fireplace with rounded pilaster ends. A ground floor room overlooking the garden also has a cornice and a dark grey marble pilastered fireplace. A staircase is present, with wood banisters and carvings.
Outbuildings include twin garages built of squared and snecked sandstone with a piended roof to the east. Various other outbuildings are located to the north. Boundary walls are varied, constructed of rubble and brick, and to the east mark the boundary with the properties at 193 Academy Road, which are situated within the original grounds.
