Description
Sovereign House is a large, two-storey school building dating from 1902, designed by John Armour, composed of two blocks set back from Academy Road in Irvine. The front façade is constructed from red sandstone ashlar, with a tooled finish to the sides and rear. The lower storey features a deep base course of bull-faced stone, a narrow cill course at ground floor level, a moulded course above the ground floor, and an eaves course. A prominent distyle in antis centrepiece is topped by domed end towers.
The north (principal) elevation is symmetrical, with bays grouped in threes and fours. The central bays form a taller, projecting section. The main entrance is set within an Ionic columned and corniced doorpiece, flanked by windows with moulded surrounds and bracketed cills; single windows are set in the returns. Plain openings are found in the four lower bays to the left and right. The taller end bays to the left and right of the advanced section also have moulded surrounds and columnar mullions. On the first floor, the central bays are recessed within a distyle in antis and feature moulded surrounds and bracketed cills. A dentil cornice runs along the wallhead. The left and right bays on the first floor have moulded surrounds and bracketed cills, with pilaster divisions. The corner bays of the north elevation have moulded surrounds, a keystone, and broad pilasters flanking them.
The east elevation shows the rear block with two bays of plain openings. A prominent advanced end tower is centrally positioned, with a tripartite ground floor window featuring a tall, moulded surround that extends to the first-floor cill and returns to the left. A doorway is set in the return at ground floor, also with a moulded surround. Above the eaves, a lead-covered dome sits atop a drum and octagonal base, with four pilastered, pedimented sides, each containing a roundel. Four square dies with pinnacles mark the corners. The two right bays (to the front) have ground-floor plain openings and a first-floor window with a moulded surround on the left, which is blind on the right; the right end features a half pilaster.
The west elevation mirrors the east elevation, with a single bay added to the left at both ground and first floors. Four basement openings are visible in the base course to the left.
The south elevation is symmetrical, with eleven bays grouped as four, three, and four. A three-bay section is advanced on the ground floor, featuring bipartites in the centre and single windows flanking, as well as to the returns. The remaining bays have a combination of single, bipartite, and tripartite windows on the ground floor, with single, bipartite, and single windows above.
The building retains timber sash and case windows. The roofs are piended and covered in grey/green slate, punctuated by four ridge stacks in the centre of the blocks.
The interior was not accessible for inspection in 1996.
Externally, the site includes square, rusticated red sandstone gatepiers at the eastern entrance, a boundary wall of varied age and condition, and derelict outbuildings to the west.
