Description
This is a primary school building, likely dating from 1873 with subsequent additions in 1894, 1901, and designed possibly by Alexander Shairp. It is situated in Oban and built into a hillside. The main block is arranged in an "H" shape, with a further addition to the north end and a square, three-story tower located in the re-entrant angle on the south side.
The building is constructed with bull-faced, squared, and snecked sandstone for the basement, and stugged, squared, and snecked sandstone walls with stugged dressings to the quoins and chamfered openings. The west, or principal, facade features advanced gables in bays 1-3 (1901), 5-7, and 12-14. A three-story entrance tower is situated in the re-entrant angle at bay 11. The windows are evenly spaced in several sections, with notable features including a transomed, bipartite window in a linking stair bay, and a pointed-arch panel above a first-floor window. The tower’s main entrance has a moulded surround and a pointed arch panel, with further windows at various levels. Bays 12-14 feature closely spaced windows with roll-moulded surrounds, and a stepped tripartite window at the first floor incorporating polished pink granite colonettes.
The south elevation consists of a six-bay arrangement with two gables linked by a smaller gablet. The eastern rear elevation mirrors the principal facade with 20th-century infill. The windows are mostly timber sash and case windows with 10 panes, although the tower incorporates 3-pane windows. Timber boarded doors include a fanlight at the rear. The roof is covered in grey slate with exposed rafter ends and ventilator bases. The tower has swept eaves and decorative brattishing at the apex. Cast-iron downpipes and guttering are present. Two stacks are visible: one with a decorative can at the rear, and a shouldered and coped wallhead stack on the south corner of the northern addition.
The boundary walls are constructed of rubble with a semi-circular cope and cement-rendered pointing, featuring capped ashlar gate posts and hoop railings along the front. A brick playshelter has a piended slate roof and cast-iron columns, and an adjoining brick toilet block with a pyramidal slate roof are also present.
