Description

The Congregational Church on Tweeddale Street in Oban was designed by Alexander Shairp and completed in 1880, with a vestry and WC added in 1894. This classical hall church features a three by six-bay layout and is built over a raised basement, presenting a rectangular plan. The principal elevation facing Tweeddale Street is constructed of polished ashlar above a bull-faced rusticated basement, while the side and rear elevations are made of squared grey rubble with ashlar dressings, which are stugged and droved at the edges.

The principal elevation includes a three-bay rusticated raised basement with louvered windows. A perron forestair leads up to the entrance, which is flanked by turned stone balusters. The central crypt door is accompanied by slit windows on either side. The bays are framed by pilasters with capitals and bases. The round-arched windows in recesses feature architraves, panelled aprons, and vermiculated keystones on the outer bays. The entrance door is set in a recess, also architraved with a vermiculated keystone and topped with a radial fanlight. Above the frieze, a corniced pediment bears the inscription "1880 Congregational Church" in the tympanum.

The side elevations have round-arched windows in each bay, with diamond-pane glazing on the side windows. The east wall features a stained glass window with a sunburst design, while the west windows have a border glazing pattern. There are two-leaf timber doors leading to the crypt and hall, along with louvered crypt windows. The north and west walls have shouldered stacks, and the building is equipped with cast-iron gutters and downpipes, as well as lamp standards on the forestair balustrade.

Inside, the church has pitch pine pews, and the pulpit is located in the center of the east wall, with an office door and steps to the right, and a matching dummy door and steps to the left.
