Description

Heathfield House is a substantial classical house dating to around 1820, with modern additions to the rear dating to approximately 1985. It is two storeys high with a raised basement, and originally comprised three bays, situated prominently on its plot. The front facade is faced in pink ashlar, while the sides and rear are constructed of brown rubble stone, with ashlar dressings. Features include an eaves cornice and a pedimented front, with pilastered ends.

The east (principal) elevation has a central bay which projects forward. Later additions include an eight-step ashlar flight of windows leading to the entrance. The front door is a replacement, set within an architraved ashlar frame recessed in a pilastered surround, topped with a Roman Doric porch, plain architrave, mutules and pediments. A bipartite window sits above the entrance, featuring a stone mullion, moulded margins, consoles, and a cornice above the head, surmounted by a small pediment. Flanking bays have openings at basement level, large windows to the principal floor with moulded margins and cornices, and first-floor windows with moulded margins. An additional wing extends from the right-hand side, visible on the north elevation.

A small, square, flat-roofed porch projects from the centre of the south elevation at basement level. This section has stone mullioned bipartites and shallow pedimented wallheads on the south and east faces. A later door has been added to the west face, with a window above on the principal floor.

The west elevation has extensive additions at basement and principal floor levels. The central bay projects, featuring a window to the principal floor and a larger window at first floor level. Flanking bays have large windows to the principal floor, with corresponding windows above at first floor.

The north elevation has an asymmetrical wing added at ground level, partially obscuring the basement and principal floors. Constructed from buff sandstone ashlar and squared and snecked brown rubble stone, it is characterised by a window to the east and further bays to the left and right, connected to recent additions. The original house's first-floor window is a six-pane timber sash and case. The roofs are covered in grey slate, with ashlar ridge stacks incorporating cornices on the north, south and east sides.

The interior of the house features decorative plasterwork in the entrance hall, including a vaulted ceiling with a patera at the intersection of four ribs and varied enrichments to the ribs and cornices. Architraved and corniced doorpieces are featured within the hall.
