Description
The Former Crosshill Annexe, located on Colinhill Road in Strathaven, was built in 1850, with an east wing and bellcote added in 1875. This single-storey, 7-bay asymmetrical U-plan former school features two prominent gabled ends and a flat-roofed hall addition situated between them. The building is finished in painted render with painted sandstone dressings, and includes a base course, an eaves course to the central hall, plain margins around the openings, blind windows, and a keystoned oculus at the gableheads, along with strip quoins.
On the principal elevation, the central 3-bay hall addition has deep-set, 2-leaf, part-glazed timber doors located in a slightly recessed bay at the center, flanked by two small windows on the right. Each side of the hall features a window in every bay, with two additional windows in each gabled bay on the outer right and left. Above these are blind oculi, and the right gablehead is topped with a bellcote.
The windows were originally boarded and were formerly steel-framed with small panes and side-opening casements. The roof is covered in grey slate, with a felt covering on the hall addition. The building also features ashlar skews, ovolo-moulded skewputts, a corniced ashlar ridge stack, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior, which was not fully seen in 1998, has a simple design with most classrooms retaining their original timber doors, timber dado, and timber floors.
