Avondale Old Parish Church, 59A Kirk Street, Strathaven

Avondale Old Parish Church, dated 1772, underwent a thorough renovation in 1879 by architect Robert A. Bryden of Clarke & Bell. This symmetrical T-plan church features a five-stage tower on its long northwest elevation, with later additions flanking the tower and at the rear. The body of the church is harled, accented with ashlar dressings and rusticated quoins, while the tower and flanking additions are constructed of stugged ashlar with rusticated quoins. The third and fourth stages of the tower have angle margins.

The original entrance at the base of the tower, which had pilastered jambs and a round-arched head, is now blocked and filled with a war memorial. An oculus has been inserted in the corniced second stage, while the third and fourth stages are each set back, featuring a small round-arched window in the former and a clock in a square panel in the latter. Above is a bellcote with a bell-cast roof, topped with a ball finial and weathervane. There is an additional entrance to the northeast of the tower.

The tall round-arched windows in each outer bay of the northwest elevation all have keystones, while the remaining elevations feature square-headed windows at the ground and gallery levels. The church is topped with a piended slate roof.

Inside, the church has galleries with panelled fronts supported by slender cast-iron columns. The pulpit includes a pilastered round-headed niche with a shell hood, flanked by organ pipes in pilastered cases. The interior also features a panelled ceiling and some leaded glass panels.
