Description
The Former Strathaven Public Hall, now serving as the Strathaven Scout and Guide centre, was designed by Alexander Cullen and built between 1895 and 1896. This two-storey building has a rectangular plan and features Baroque detailing. It has four bays facing Kirk Street and eight bays along Thomson Street, with a curved corner and a corbelled turret topped by a bell-cast dome. The front block is constructed from squared and snecked red sandstone, while the rear hall block uses squared and snecked yellow sandstone. Red sandstone ashlar dressings are present, along with a base course, cill course, and a band course at the eaves. The front block also displays long and short raised ashlar quoins.
The entrance on the southeast elevation (Kirk Street) is asymmetrical, featuring a Roman Doric doorpiece with blocked Gibbs-style columns and a broken pediment that holds decorative monogrammed railings (SPH) beneath the window above. The entrance has timber panelled doors set within a glazed brick arch. To the right, there are two wide round-headed ground floor windows, with one to the left. A stepped gable to the right contains a Venetian window with Gibbs surrounds and cornices at the first floor, along with two first floor windows to the left. The corbelled corner turret features three rectangular windows in Gibbs surrounds, and there is a cornice at the eaves level with a memorial stone below.
The southwest elevation (Thomson Street) includes a two-bay entrance block on the right with a wide round-arched window and two smaller windows, along with a round-arched stair window above. The remaining six bays of the hall to the left are slightly recessed, featuring four bays of round-headed windows interspersed with two bays of irregular fenestration. There is a slightly advanced three-storey gabled bay on the left with a blind oculus.
The northeast elevation mirrors the southwest elevation, with a steel fire escape to the southeast and a brick stair to the northwest. The interior access was not obtained in 2004. The building has PVCu glazing, which has replaced a variety of earlier glazing styles. The roofs are covered with graded grey slate and are piended on the front block, with a gablehead stack at the rear and cast iron rainwater goods.
