West Church, Townhead Street, Strathaven

West Church, located on Townhead Street in Strathaven, was built in 1835. This rectangular-plan, symmetrical church features Gothic architectural details. The entrance front facing Townhead Street is made of polished ashlar. It has a shallow advanced entrance bay that is approached by steps, with a door that has splayed reveals and a hood mould. Above the entrance is a blind castellated parapet. There is one tall window in each outer bay, and a gallery window over the entrance, all featuring Tudor arches, Y-tracery, and hood moulds. Slender octagonal shafts at the outer angles support a cornice, blocking course, and pinnacles. The elevation facing Thomson Street is harled and includes four tall, segmental-headed windows. The roof is piended and covered with slate. The original octagonal gatepiers have corniced caps, and there are decorative cast iron railings.

Inside, the pulpit is flanked by stairs with iron balustrades and tall windows, which have leaded glass panels made by W. & J. J. Kier of Glasgow. The gallery runs along three walls and is supported by slender cast-iron clustered columns.
