48 Townhead Street, Strathaven

48 Townhead Street in Strathaven is a single-storey, asymmetrical villa built around 1880-1890 by architect Robert Thomson, reflecting the style of Alexander Thomson. The building is constructed from stugged red sandstone with polished dressings. On the right side, there is a door and two windows that are deeply recessed behind a pilastrade. To the left, an advanced gabled bay features four lights, also recessed, sitting over a plinth with a moulded cill band and lintel. The gable includes a circular ventilator and the eaves project deeply. A stack on the southwest wall has a chimney pot decorated with Greek motifs, and the roof is covered with slate. There is a small modern extension set back on the left side.

Inside, the original chimney pieces have been removed, but decorative plasterwork remains in the cornices. In the front room to the south, there is an imposing pilastered and pedimented sideboard recess, featuring unique anthemion and palmette capitals, with the same design repeated in the frieze.
