42 Kirk Street, Strathaven

42 Kirk Street in Strathaven is an early 19th-century building that stands two storeys high on a slope. The elevation facing Kirk Street is rendered with painted margins and features broad angle margins lined to resemble ashlar stone. There is a band course at ground floor level, a central corniced door, and an altered shop window and door that are recessed into the angle on the left. The first floor has three sash windows, with some original 12-pane glazing still intact. The building also has an eaves course, a cornice, a blocking course, and a central wall head pediment topped with an apex stack.

The elevation facing Wellbrae consists of five bays, with two bays in a gable at the right. This side is made of painted rubble with margins. It features an off-centre door with a tall six-pane fanlight, a shop door and window to the left, and two sash windows along with a shop window to the right. There are four sash windows on the first floor and a small attic window in the right bay. An eaves course runs over the three left bays, and there are end stacks. The roof is slate and piended at the northwest. Additionally, there is one surviving square-plan painted ashlar gatepier at the northwest corner, which has a corniced cap.
