Description

The Old School House in Forbestown, possibly built in 1838, is a tall Tudor-style, single-storey building that originally served as a schoolroom. It has a rectangular plan and features two windows in the gable facing the road to the south, along with large tripartite windows that break the eaves into gabled dormerheads on the west side. There is also an adjoining two-storey, three-bay schoolhouse with stone window heads that break the eaves and has been extended at the rear. The exterior is harled with ashlar margins and quoin strips, and it includes pointed arch windows with raked cills, timber transoms, and mullions, as well as a blocked oculus in the schoolroom.

The schoolroom on the west side has transomed tripartite windows flanking a square-headed tripartite window on the west elevation, and there are two transomed bipartite windows on the south gable, which are obscured by foliage, along with an oculus above a lean-to outshot on the north gable. The symmetrical south elevation, which serves as the entrance, features a central door flanked by windows.

The schoolroom has a multi-pane glazing pattern in decoratively astragalled timber windows, while the schoolhouse has top-opening plate glass glazing that is out of character. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are cast iron fanlights. The building features coped harled and ashlar stacks with cans, as well as ashlar-coped skews with moulded skewputts.

Inside, some notable details have been retained, including the schoolroom with a hammerbeam roof supported by stone corbels and a boarded dado. The schoolhouse features panelled timber doors, timber balusters, and granite and marble fireplaces.
