Description

The Manse at Strathdon Parish Church, built in 1831 by probably Archibald Simpson, incorporates elements from 1791. This two-storey and attic, three-bay, rectangular-plan building features a simple Tudor-style front with an M-gabled roof. It has a round-headed doorway with a decorative semicircular fanlight and retains much of its original interior detail. The manse is set within garden grounds and forms an unaltered group with the nearby Parish Church and graveyard. The exterior is finished in harled granite with ashlar margins.

The symmetrical principal elevation faces west, featuring a central door under a small window, with larger windows on each floor flanking slightly projecting gables. The rear elevation showcases 1791 details, including a large central stair window and a bowed single-storey flat-roofed projection on the left side.

The windows are timber sash and case with 12- and 18-pane glazing patterns. The roof is covered with graded grey slates, and there are coped ashlar stacks with thackstanes and polygonal cans, as well as ashlar-coped skews with block skewputts.

Inside, there is a fine decorative scheme that includes moulded cornices and well-crafted panelled timberwork throughout, featuring shutters, soffits, reveals, and architraved doors. The granite fireplace openings, some with timber surrounds, add to the interior's character. A winding stair with plain ironwork balusters leads to the first floor, which has deeply coomed ceilings and evidence of original window openings in the central hall. The attic contains servant quarters with a cupboard likely converted from a box bed.

The property is enclosed by early flat-coped, high rubble boundary walls that form the rear garden.
