Description

Bellabeg House is a fine 2-storey and attic T-plan laird's house, likely built between 1690 and 1730, with minor alterations made in 1765. The kitchen wing link was added in the early 20th century, and there was an addition to the west in the later 20th century. It overlooks the Lonach field and is the least altered of the principal houses in the glen. The house features an early single-storey kitchen wing with a monumental semicircular fireplace arch, a semicircular nepus gable, and fine original interior details. It is constructed of red granite ashlar with contrasting dark granite cherry caulking, and some harl is present on the sides and rear. The stone cills and lintels are complemented by a keystoned round-headed window in the nepus gable, which has a timber mullion.

The symmetrical entrance elevation faces south, featuring a central door with pilastered jambs beneath an armorial panel. Above this is an unusually styled bipartite window, leading to the nepus gable that includes a small round-headed window and a stack topped with a ball finial. The kitchen wing projects at the southwest.

The windows are timber sash and case, with a 12-pane glazing pattern, except for the bipartite window which has an 8-pane pattern. The roof is covered with graded grey slates, and the chimneys are capped with coped ashlar stacks and polygonal cans. The skews are also ashlar-coped.

Inside, the house features a fine decorative scheme that includes 6-panelled architraved doors, timber shutters, dado rails, and a dog-leg staircase with timber balusters. The main house has an imported timber fire surround with a cast iron grate, while the kitchen boasts a monumental voussoired semicircular fireplace arch with two salt boxes.
