Description

The Mitchell-Forbes Mausoleum, located at Strathdon Parish Church in Strathdon, was likely designed by Archibald Simpson in 1829. This unusual and distinctive mausoleum is made of granite ashlar and features a two-stage Egyptian design. It forms a group with the church, churchyard, and the nearby former manse on the edge of Bellabeg village. The mausoleum has a Greek cross plan for the first stage and a reduced square plan for the second stage. Its walls are battered and adorned with cavetto cornices, showcasing a simple architectural treatment. It was built for Mary Forbes, the wife of Daniel Mitchell.
