Description

Brodick Primary School, dated 1854, is a single-storey building with an attic, featuring Tudor details and an irregular plan in a Picturesque style. It is constructed from stugged and snecked red squared rubble sandstone with ashlar dressings and has piended slate roofs. The building includes a base course, stop-chamfered angles, deep bracketed eaves, and exposed post and purlin details at the gables. The bargeboards at the principal gables display a quatrefoil motif pattern. Windows are single, paired, and tripartite, featuring chamfered openings with Tudor-arch heads and dripmoulds on the principal schoolroom windows, and timber sash and case frames of various pane designs. The roof has tall corniced octagonal stacks.

On the front elevation, the principal gable is slightly advanced to the centre left, with a tripartite window on the ground floor and a date panel above it, along with a bipartite window in the attic. There is a slightly recessed bay to the right with tripartite windows and a bargeboarded gable on the right return. A gabled entrance porch is recessed to the far right, featuring paired doors and an 8-pane Tudor-arch fanlight. Further to the right is a bay that is also recessed, containing two windows. Both the porch and the outer bay are masked by a modern addition. On the outer left, there is a schoolhouse bay with a panelled door in an ashlar doorcase and a slightly swept roof to the right, along with a single window to the left.

The south elevation has three bays for the schoolhouse on the right, with a gable slightly advanced to the centre that includes a window and a small oculus above. There are windows in the bays to the left and right, with a bay recessed to the left that has a bipartite window. The north elevation features a bay advanced to the right with a tripartite window and a bay at the left re-entrant angle with a bipartite window. The west elevation is plain, with various windows and gables.

Inside, the school is largely unaltered, retaining original joinery, including panelled doors and window reveals, cornices, some chimneypieces, and a First World War memorial plaque.
