Description
The Primary School in Garelochhead dates from the earlier to mid 19th century and is a two-storey, three-bay rectangular building with a gabled roof featuring Tudor-Gothic details. It has modern school buildings attached to the rear on the north and east sides. The exterior is finished in cream and white painted harl with painted sandstone dressings and margins, featuring chamfered reveals and raised cills. Notable architectural elements include a base course, Tudor hood moulds, and blank shields in the gablehead, as well as projecting bracketed eaves.
On the southeast elevation, there are three bays, with an advanced gabled bay on the outer left. This bay has a canted ground floor with a half-pitched roof and a window at the first floor, along with a shield in the gablehead. The two bays to the right are recessed and feature a Tudor-Gothic porch set in a re-entrant angle, supported by octagonal piers with battered bases framing a now-blocked three-centred entrance. There is a similar door on the right return, a parapet, and a modern door with a segmental two-pane fanlight above which is a window. To the right, there is a bay with a gable breaking the eaves, which includes a tripartite, segmental-headed window at the ground floor, a single window at the first floor, and a vent at the gablehead.
The east elevation consists of a two-bay main block with a gable breaking the eaves on the outer left. It features a canted bay at the ground floor and a shield at the gablehead. There is a narrow window off-centre to the left at the first floor, with symmetrically disposed windows on the outer right at both the ground and first floors. A single-storey, single-bay block is located on the outer right, and the house connects to the modern school building via a four-bay recessed block to the right.
On the west elevation, there is a tripartite window at the ground outer right and a single blocked window at the first floor, along with a recessed two-bay block to the left. The windows throughout include four-over-six pane sash and case styles, with six-pane over plate glass for the outer bay first floor windows on the south elevation, and plate glass sash and case for the canted windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and features lead flashings, diamond-set, rendered and block-coped ridge stacks, and circular cans.
Inside, the school features a rib-vaulted vestibule and plain cornices, with a three-centred arch on paired colonettes, plain panelled doors, and a plain stair.
The boundary wall and gatepiers consist of a rubble wall with harl-pointing, although it has been modernly re-pointed with cement. The ashlar piers feature trefoil arch panels and shaped caps, with the cap on the left pier missing.
