Description

Greyholme is a large chalet-style house built in 1938 by William J Gibson of Glasgow for his own residence. It is a two-storey and attic house with a raised basement, arranged in an 'L' shape and double-pile construction. The exterior is clad with two layers of natural edge elm, with 'Cellatex' felt lining, and is topped with a modern concrete tile roof that replaced the original shingles. The design is unusual for Scotland and unique for the Isle of Arran.

Architectural features include deep, bracketed eaves, decorative bargeboards, and oversailing brick stacks. The front elevation is dominated by a boarded entrance door approached by a timber forestair with a balcony extending to the right return. Pilaster strips flanking the door consist of Minton-type tiles. A stair window is positioned above the door, with a large and small window to the left at both the principal and upper floors. A wrap-around window is located to the right, and a recessed bay on the far right includes French doors, a verandah, and French doors leading to an upper floor. Stone volutes at the base of the forestair are reputedly from Hamilton Palace. A balcony cantilevers from part of the principal floor. Most windows are casements with eight panes, or top-hopper windows.

The right return elevation has a gable to the left featuring a verandah with continuous French doors and windows, and two upper floor windows. Further to the right is a gable with two principal and upper floor windows. The left return elevation features a balcony and French doors at the principal floor, two upper floor windows, and two small attic windows. Another gable is recessed, containing two windows on each floor. The rear elevation is characterised by an advanced bay with continuous glazing on both the principal and upper floors, while recessed bays to the right feature a forestair, balcony, and a lean-to porch flanked by windows to the left and right. Three upper floor windows are also present.

The interior retains many original features, including hardwood floors, fireplaces, and carved newel posts by Claude Gill. Signed and dated sketch plans by Gibson, showing his address at 188 St Vincent Street, Glasgow, are held within the house.
