5-9 Alvanley Terrace, Edinburgh

5-9 Alvanley Terrace is a four-storey, six-bay tenement building designed by Thomas Gibson in 1877, with a recessed seventh bay and shops located on the ground floor. The exterior features lightly stugged grey ashlar with polished dressings. Notable architectural details include a decorative carved cornice above the shops, raised window surrounds that are architraved on the first floor, and pedimented dormer heads for the third-floor windows.

The west entrance elevation has three (formerly four) shopfronts with a continuous fascia and decorative cornice, along with a panelled main door fascia and decorative cornice, and a panelled main door at ground level. There is a full-height canted window at the angle in the sixth bay, topped with a polygonal roof. The first, third, and fourth bays feature bipartite windows, while the recessed seventh bay has a single window at ground level and single windows above. The remaining bays each have single windows on every floor. The building has plate glass and case windows, a grey slate roof, a corniced wallhead stack on the south return, and coped mutual stacks.

The interiors were not seen in 1991.
