Description

8 Russell Place in Edinburgh is a domestic gothic house built around 1864. It is a two-storey, two-bay structure with an L-shaped plan, featuring a gabled porch and a projecting gabled bay. The exterior is made of squared and snecked tooled sandstone with ashlar dressings, stugged quoins, and rubble on the sides and rear. The window openings have chamfered reveals and mullions, while the gabletted skews and bracketed skewputts add to its architectural detail.

On the principal elevation, the left bay has a projecting gabled porch with a boarded timber door set in a Tudor-arched, stop-chamfered surround. There is an arrowslit blind opening in the gable and a bipartite window in the gablehead that breaks the eaves at the first floor, with another arrowslit blind opening above. To the right, there is a two-storey projecting window with stone-mullioned quadripartite windows at both the ground and first floors, topped with a stone-slabbed roof and decorative brattishing. Additionally, flat-roofed and lean-to garage blocks have been added to the outer left and right sides.

The windows are fitted with plate glass in timber sash and case frames, and the roof is covered with grey slates. The house features gabled stone coped stacks with circular cans. A low stone-coped wall forms the boundary at the front of the property.
