Description

Clairinsh, located at 12 and 12A Russell Place in Edinburgh, is a house built around 1864. It is a two-storey, three-bay structure with a gabled roof, featuring a two-storey canted window and a pitched-roofed porch. The house displays decorative bargeboarding with kingposts and finials on the gables. The exterior is made of squared and snecked bull-faced sandstone with ashlar dressings, and it has long and short quoins. There is a base course and a projecting dividing course between the ground and first floors. The window surrounds are tabbed and chamfered, and there are long and short quoins.

On the west (principal) elevation, there is an advanced bay to the left with a two-storey canted window that is corbelled out and swept to a square shape in the gable. The dividing course extends upward as a hoodmould over a rectangular panel in the center, which features a quatrefoil carving with a heraldic device in the gable. The entrance is located in a porch that has a pitched roof supported by brackets and bargeboarding, with a stop-chamfered entrance in the center bay and a small window above. The right bay has two-light windows with stone mullions at the ground level and breaking eaves at the first-floor gablehead.

The north and south side elevations have prominent quoined stacks, and there is a lower two-storey wing at the rear with a modern conservatory attached to the ground floor on the north side, featuring gabled windows that break the eaves on the first floor.

The windows are predominantly plate glass in timber sash and case style. The roof is covered with blue/grey slates, which are decorative on the porch. The house has corniced ashlar stacks with octagonal cans and urn-shaped heads on the downpipes.

The boundary wall is made of coursed sandstone with an ashlar coping.
