Description

South Gothic Cottage, located at 22 Russell Place in Edinburgh, dates from around 1825. This single-storey and attic gothic cottage features an asymmetrical design with a later extension. The southern and western elevations are finished in fine droved ashlar, while the eastern and northern sides are constructed from coursed rubble. Notable architectural details include hoodmoulds and chamfered surrounds around the windows, a base course, and projecting eaves adorned with scalloped barge-boarding on the gables.

The west elevation has three bays, with the entrance positioned in the slightly advanced centre bay. It features a timber-panelled door topped by a plate glass fanlight, all set within a chamfered, Tudor-arched, and hoodmoulded surround. The left bay contains a two-light pointed-arched window.

On the south elevation, there are also three bays, with the centre bay advanced. It features a canted window with a projecting lead roof, scalloped barge-boarding, stone mullions, and perpendicular tracery, along with stained glass in the upper eight panes. To the left is a two-light pointed-arched window, while the right bay has a three-light pointed-arched window.

The east elevation includes a later projecting two-bay extension on the right, built in squared and snecked sandstone, which returns to the south in droved ashlar. The left bay has a timber-panelled door with a plate glass fanlight in a chamfered surround, while the right bay features a three-light pointed-arched window.

Inside, the cottage boasts good plasterwork, chimneypieces, and gothic joinery details. The windows are predominantly timber sash and case, pointed-arched in style. The roof is covered with graded grey slates, and there are diagonally-set slim corniced ashlar stacks topped with decorative octagonal cans.
