Description

The Market Cross on Castle Street in Aberdeen is an impressive structure originally created by John Montgomery of Old Rayne in 1686. It underwent repairs in 1821-1822 and was moved to its current location, where it was further repaired in 1841-1842. The column was replaced in 1995-1996.

This Mercat Cross is located in the center of Castlegate and features shallow steps leading up to a round-arched, arcarded hexagonal base. The base is adorned with Ionic pilasters that separate each bay and has an impost course and a central pier, all made from sandstone. A decorative carved cornice with gargoyles enhances its appearance. The deep circular parapet is divided into 12 carved panels, with consoles separating each panel. At the top, a tall, narrow, slender Corinthian carved column is surmounted by a gilt marble unicorn.
