Description

The New Market Cross in The Square, Wigtown, was built in 1816. This octagonal market cross is approximately 40 feet high and made of granite. It stands on an octagonal paving with four steps leading up to a buttressed pedestal. The pedestal features offset buttresses that divide pointed arch panels, along with a frieze and cornice above. The base of the shaft is also octagonal, and each face is topped with gablet caps. The octagonal shaft supports a cross finial at the top. There is a plaque located on the west face of the pedestal.
